Step-by-Step Guide to the
Speech-Language Assessment Process

At SoCal Speech-Language Therapy, we take a personalized, evidence-based approach to evaluating your child’s communication needs.

Each step is designed to ensure we gather a holistic understanding of your child’s strengths, challenges, and support needs.
While the process may vary slightly depending on your child’s age or areas of concern, here’s what you can expect:

  • Contacting Out Office: Parents, caregivers, or referring professionals can contact us by phone, email, or through our website inquiry form.
  • Initial Phone Call: A brief conversation helps us understand your primary concerns, developmental and medical history, and the specific questions you’re hoping the assessment can answer. Based on the initial consultation, Dr. Kekejian will determine the most appropriate assessment tools and procedures to address the specific questions and concerns.
  • Intake Forms: If an assessment is appropriate, we will provide secure digital intake forms through our HIPAA-compliant electronic medical records system, SimplePractice. These forms gather comprehensive information about the client’s developmental, medical, educational, and behavioral history to support a thorough and individualized evaluation.
  • In-Clinic Testing: Dr. Kekejian administers a combination of standardized and non-standardized speech-language, social communication, and early literacy assessments tailored to your child’s unique needs.
  • Play-Based & Naturalistic Observation: Especially for younger children, observations during play and daily routines are essential for understanding real-world communication skills.
  • Language Sample Analysis: As part of every assessment, we collect a language sample to evaluate expressive language, grammar, narrative skills, and intelligibility in connected speech.
  • Collaboration with Other Providers (if applicable): We may consult with pediatricians, therapists, or educators (with written consent) for additional insight into your child’s needs across settings.
  • Data Analysis: Dr. Kekejian analyzes test results, observations, and questionnaire data to build a comprehensive communication profile.
  • Clinical Integration: All findings are synthesized with developmental history and contextual information to determine areas of strength and those needing support.
  • Detailed Written Summary: You’ll receive a clear, user-friendly report that includes test results, clinical impressions, and individualized recommendations.
  • Customized Recommendations: We provide practical, evidence-based recommendations for therapy, school supports, and strategies for home.
  • Collaborative Review: We schedule a meeting with caregivers to discuss the results in a clear and compassionate way. We explain diagnoses (if applicable), describe your child’s communication profile, and answer all your questions.
  • Sharing with Your Team (If applicable): With your permission, this report can be shared with your child’s IEP team, pediatrician, or other professionals involved in their care.
